Shop Technician – Columbus, OH

Primarily responsible for the in-house inspection, testing, and recharging of fire extinguisher and suppression system cylinders in accordance with DOT and NFPA guidelines. This position also requires regular maintenance of facility grounds as well as the shop area itself.

Primary Functions:

Hydrotesting/Hydrostatic Requalification of Fire Suppression Cylinders:

  • Perform low pressure hydro-testing on extinguisher cylinders with rating of below 1000psi ( per DOT 49CFR guidelines)
  • Perform high pressure hydro-testing on extinguisher cylinders with rating of above 1000psi (per DOT 49CFR guidelines)
  • Dry extinguisher cylinders after testing
  • Inspect interior of cylinder before and after testing for corrosion or remaining moisture
  • Prepare extinguisher for recharge
  • Record and keep track of cylinder serial numbers, size, test/service pressure, and customer in database
  • Print and file test results on a daily basis
  • Place tested extinguishers for re-use by extinguisher technicians, communicating with them on a regular basis

Recharge Fire Extinguishers:

  • Ensure fire extinguisher is prepped and ready for acceptance of dry chemical prior to recharge
  • Fill extinguisher with dry chemical to appropriate pressure
  • Maintain service record of cylinder recharge

Extinguisher Preparation & Service:

  • Prepare extinguishers for testing, emptying chemical and disassembling valve
  • Inspect dry chemical for moisture or contamination and prepare for reuse if suitable
  • Inspect extinguisher cylinder for corrosion
  • Replace mechanical parts and “O” rings in valve and re-assemble valve
  • Perform maintenance on extinguisher in accordance with NFPA guidelines and/or manufacturer recommendations
  • Prepare extinguisher for recharge
  • Recharge extinguisher upon completion of testing and re-assembly
  • Communicate with extinguisher technicians regarding completed tests.

Shop, Facility, and Vehicle Maintenance:

  • Empty trash from trash bins
  • Sweep and mop (when necessary) shop and facility floors
  • Ensure that Shop area is clean and well organized
  • Inspect facility grounds, both interior and exterior, and perform grounds maintenance as needed
  • Clean facilities as needed
  • Aid in receiving and recordkeeping of new extinguisher stock
  • Aid in the performance of general vehicle cleaning and maintenance when needed
  • Aid with inventory control when needed
  • Perform general facility and grounds maintenance as directed by supervisor.
  • Ensure that Hydro-test, CO2, and Clean Agent Recovery systems are serviced and maintained properly

Customer Service:

  • Offer excellent service to walk-in customers, selling extinguishers and service as needed
  • Explain repair and service work to customers when needed

  • Provide strong customer service, interacting with customers in a positive and professional manner at all times

Essential Functions:

  • Inspect facility grounds, both interior and exterior, and perform grounds maintenance as needed
  • Rebuild and install extinguisher valves upon completion of testing, replacing mechanical parts and “O” rings
  • Record and keep track of cylinder serial numbers, size, test/service pressure, and customer in database

  • Must be able to understand and interpret industry codes and standards.
  • Must be familiar with NFPA and DOT guidelines as they pertain to extinguisher and cylinder inspection and recharge
  • Must maintain ability to meet DOT approval requirements without exclusions
  • Must be able to safely and effectively use general hand tools and power tools
  • Must be able to safely operate a forklift. Associate must meet OSHA & internal forklift certification requirements
